The Renaissance was the recovery of ancient learning. Most of classical learning was utterly lost in the Dark Ages. But Petrarcha and those who came after enthusiastically embarked on a campaign to recover the literature, architecture, and ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. This was a time before magic and monsters, an age when human beings ruled. Thus, the enthusiasts called themselves uomanista, or Humanists.
