[Altearth home]

I was educated as a historian, have spent my life working with computers, and have always been a writer. This website in a sense represents a blending of all three.

About the Author

I am a computer tech and a teacher of medieval history at Boise State University. Iíve done both jobs since the mid-1980s, working as the universityís first PC support tech and then its first webmaster before moving over into web programming. I retired from that occupation at the end of June 2013, though I continue to teach.

Despite my day job, my training is in history, having received my M.A. in medieval history from the University of Utah in 1980 and my PhD in early modern Europe from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1984. I have published a few academic articles.

I have been writing all my life. Only in recent years have my efforts been coherent enough to begin producing stories that hang together and manage to get from beginning to end in one piece. Here are my fiction publications.

Combining my two careers, Iíve taught history online since the early 1990s. To the best of my knowledge, I was the first to offer a Western Civ course over the Web for college credit, and the first in the same medium to offer an upper division course for credit. All my course material has always been open to the public, and the curious are welcome to view my work. In addition to four online courses, I have also built two sites that are ancillary to those courses.

I have been married since 1969 and have three grown children and two grandchildren. Besides my work I enjoy reading, gardening, and composing electronic music.

About the Site

This site is background for my Altearth stories. Here you can learn more about the world inhabited by people such as the Roadmaster, Hugo Vuerloz, L. Julianus Metellus, and the Princess Inglena. You can also find out why magic doesn't always work, whether phlogiston is real, whether real is real, and what happened to the last dragons.

Put more plainly, this site consists of various stories told about a fictional past in which many of the names and places and events are real but in which goblins and elves and magic are also real. Some of the entries are presented as works of literary fiction whereas others are presented as scholarly history or whatever literary genre I care to indulge in. I've worked pictures into this fantasy and I hope one day to include audio as well.

Although this is a personal recreation, it's published on the Net because I do hope others read it and find it amusing and interesting. If you have thoughts on AltEarth or even contributions (literary, not monetary!), feel free to send them to me. I'm at elkinheadlights at the lovely gmail, and if a spambot can scrape that, then welcome to it.
